Bed bugs are extremely hard to get rid of once you have an infestation. And there are so many options to get rid
of them that it quickly becomes overwhelming. The most popular pesticide to use against them was DDT, but
unfortunately it was banned in the 1970's (Thanks to the hippies according to Howard Stern). But there are bed bug
repellents and a bed bug spray that you can use to help combat these blood sucking pests.
Bed Bug Spray
Even with bed bug sprays, there are a multitude of options to choose from. Many brands claim that they are the
best, and claims that they will solve your bed bug problems. But let me tell you the dirty truth. In most cases, a
bed bug spray is not going to completely eliminate your bed bug problems. They be appear to be dead for a while,
but magically they will surface again in mass droves.
Here are some popular bed bug sprays:
If you want to try a bed bug spray then you may want to consider the following:
- It should be registered with the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, so that you can be assured that you
aren't using any chemicals that are banned or extremely toxic to you and your pets. It is a good idea to keep it
away from all of your pets. Dogs and cats have especially sensitive noses and it can do a lot of harm to them. Non
toxic is a good idea.
- You want the spray to kill them right now and not in 5 days. You also want to make sure that it will kill
their eggs and young ones.
- Make sure that the spray is safe for your fabrics and furniture. You don't want it to stain or damage your
furniture.
- Some bed bug sprays are flammable. This is probably the most ridiculous thing. You don't want to be spraying
flammable liquids in your house, especially since bedding is static prone.
There are also sprays that leave a residue for more bed bugs to wander on but these should only be used in
places where you aren't going to touch like cracks in walls or under carpets. And hopefully you don't have any
pets. But these residues contain moisture that can allow household molds to grow. So this is not a good
solution.
Bed Bug Repellent
Bed bug repellent is another bug treatment in an easy spray. Repellent means that it will repel or deter bed
bugs from going near it. So if you already have a bed bug infestation, you are wasting money because this will not
kill bed bugs. There is little research to back up that these are effective. However, they are used by many people
with reports of success.
However, it is not a total waste of money if you travel. One idea that I had was to spray my suitcase with
repellent for when I travel. That way no bed bugs would hitch a ride in my suitcase waiting to be relocated to my
home mattress. Just make sure you don't drench your clothing. Some of the repellents used contain a foul odor as
well.
While I'm not a fan of bed bug spray or any bed bug repellent product. But they can alleviate some of the bed
bug symptoms until a more appropriate solution is obtained.
